Real owner review — Porter, Texas

I run my house on solar. Here’s exactly what works — and what doesn’t.

No lab tests, no sponsor copy. Every review here comes from equipment I bought with my own money and run every day on my Porter, Texas homestead — hybrid off-grid on the main house, 100% off-grid on the shed, backed by a 50kWh LiFePO4 battery bank.

Pros
  • Handles the whole house — AC, well pump, and server rack — without breaking a sweat
  • Zero failures and zero support calls since installation
  • Clean upgrade path from the 6000XP with no rewiring surprises
Cons
  • Overkill if you’re only backing up a few circuits
  • Higher upfront cost than the 6000XP
  • Setup screens still take some getting used to

Who’s behind this

Self-taught, hurricane-tested, still learning

I’m Richard. No engineering degree, no solar certification — just an IT background and a habit of taking things apart until I understand them. Everything on this site started because I wanted power that didn’t depend on the grid staying up.
“The grid didn’t fail at the pole. It failed right at our connection — right when we needed the water pump most during a brush fire. That changed everything for me.”
A hurricane took out power to the house for days not long after. Between that and the fire, I stopped treating backup power as optional. The main house now runs hybrid off-grid — EG4 inverters with utility as backup — and the shed conversion runs 100% off-grid on its own bank. Every review on this site is gear I bought, installed, and lived with.
Porter, Texas. No sponsor copy, no purity test — just what actually worked and what I’d do differently.
Where I buy my own gear

Signature Solar — the supplier behind most of what's on this homestead

This post contains affiliate links, but that’s not why the gear is here — the EG4 inverters and LiFePO4 packs running my house were bought with my own money first. Signature Solar is simply where I buy, and where I send readers who want the same deal I got.
